International #DayofTheGirl Child 2016: What counts for Girls!

Every 11th of October is marked International Day of the Girl Child.

According to the UN, the world’s 1.1 billion girls are part of a large and vibrant global generation poised to take on the future.

Yet the ambition for gender equality in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) highlights the preponderance of disadvantage and discrimination borne by girls everywhere on a daily basis.

In Nigeria and parts of Africa (sub-Saharan Africa), the number of early child marriage keeps increasing.

With the theme of this year (2016) #DayOfTheGirl as “Girls’ Progress = Goals’ Progress: What Counts for Girls”, we need to look into the challenge of early child marriage, uphold the girl’s child rights so they can fulfill their full potentials – this is what counts for girls.

Let’s Educate. Inspire. Empower. And Nurture the girl child..

Nurture a Girl, Nurture Generations.

International Day of Nonviolence – #NonviolenceIsTheWay

Every 2nd of October is International Day of Nonviolence (Gandhi’s birthday).

The day started in 2007, after the United Nations General Assembly voted for it, asking members to observe it by spreading “the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness.”

On this International Day of Non-Violence, Better Nigeria Youth Forum commemorates the philosophy of the late Mahatma Gandhi, who through his example proved that peaceful protests could accomplish much more than military aggression.

The principles enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in 1948 (year of Gandhi’s death), owes much to his beliefs.

At this time of increased sectarian violence and the wanton destruction, The life and leadership of Mahatma Gandhi (who helped lead India to independence) has been the inspiration for non-violent movements for civil rights and social change across the world. Throughout his life, Gandhi remained committed to his belief in non-violence even under unseemingly insurmountable challenges.

In line with Goal 16 of the #GlobalGoals and as a means to reject physical violence to bring about social and political change, Better Nigeria Youth Forum (BNYF) presents a Twitter chat/hangout on International Day of Nonviolence #idnv With:-
Ambassador Olumide Idowu; @OlumideIDOWU and Adepeju Jaiyeoba; @Pjlalah

Olumide IDOWU is the Social Media & Campaign Specialist for @ClimateWed and also the Youth Ambassador for @SaveChildrenNG and @UNISDR (The UN’s office for disaster risk reduction and secretariat of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction).

Adepeju Jaiyeoba is CEO of Mother’s Delivery Kit Ventures and Founder of Brown Button Foundation (Brown Button provides simple life-saving solutions for mothers & babies in Africa). Watch President Obama praise their work here: youtu.be/DUs14cAp2wg

An alumni of Austin University, Texas, she has been hosted and honored by President Barack Obama, the U.S. Embassy, and other international bodies in recognition of her enviable works.
An active member of the YALI NETWORK, Adepeju is a 2014 Mandela Washington Fellow

Join us this Friday as we host these great personalities | On Twitter | Starting from 2pm | Hashtag is #NonviolenceIsTheWay | Powered by @betternaija12

Remember, Gandhi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world!” Kind Regards,
Usayn.

It’s #ReadABookDay : What books are you reading or recommend?

The first celebration of Read a Book Day was around the end of the first decade of the 2000’s and was almost certainly the idea of a librarian, probably one who was encouraging youngsters to read a book.

On Read a Book Day, it’s not compulsory to read a whole book but the day serves as inspiration to people to read a section of a book they particularly enjoyed, to read with children, to donate a book to a children’s school library (or an orphanage home), or to host a book reading party.

Although the day was probably thought of with print books in mind, e-books are equally suitable for celebrating Read a Book Day (especially in this age and time we’re in).

The main goal is to encourage reading, as both fiction and non-fiction books open up huge unknown vistas to enquiring minds.

Taking the opportunity to enjoy some time out of the day to relax and read is good for the soul and the mind.

What books are you reading right now? What books do you recommend?

Help #FreePalestine , Sign the Petition to end Israel’s blockade and help people of Gaza rebuild their lives

Dear friends,
A year after the devastating war on Gaza, thousands of children are still sleeping in the rubble of their homes.
No child should be made to live in the ruins of their home, study with bomb blasts through their classrooms, or not get basic health care because clinics have been destroyed.

We have a plan to change this — Avaaz has joined forces with top aid agencies working in Gaza to launch an emergency campaign to call on key donors to get the materials in.
As main governments are paying to rebuild Gaza, they can insist Israel lifts the restrictions.
If we create a worldwide outcry too loud to ignore, we can push our governments to move beyond words, and ramp up diplomacy to end the blockade.

Sign the petition — it’s time to show our leaders inaction on this humanitarian crisis is unacceptable: https://secure.avaaz.org/en/gaza_blockade_loc/?bUwJBjb&v=63790

Just 5 percent of the 6,700,000 tonnes of steel bars, cement and aggregates needed to rebuild what was destroyed since the end of the war has been permitted to enter Gaza. At this rate, it could take 17 years before Gaza is rebuilt.

Israel claims the restrictions are for security, but the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross have told Israel imposing this blockade on Gaza is a violation of international law.
The blockade has been ongoing for 8 years, and it has only led to three tragic wars full of bloodshed and destruction.

For years our global community has taken action together with Avaazers in Palestine and Israel calling for an end to the repression and violence, and urging the world to act for justice, freedom and peace. Last year’s indiscriminate attacks killed almost 500 innocent children, a year later traumatised children are still desperate for our help. Let’s echo their cries and help ensure their homes are rebuilt.

With hope and determination,
Usayn, Fadi, Alice, Melanie, Wissam, Emily, Falastine, Ricken and the rest of the Avaaz team.

Thanks!

World Population Day: Youths Population and Its Impact on Leadership

Greetings Your Excellencies…

Today is World Population Day. Our Lead Visionary Officer or Cordinator, Zamiat would be telling us the impact of Youths in Leadership. Take out time to read and digest this:

WHO IS A YOUTH?
According to the UN, ‘YOUTH’ is best understood as a period of transition from the dependence of childhood to adulthood’s independence.
That’s why, as a category, Youth is more fluid than other fixed age-groups. Yet, age is the easiest way to define this group, particularly in relation to education and employment. Because, ‘youths’ are often referred to as people between the ages of leaving compulsory education, and finding their first job.

A youth is self dependent, has the ability to transform his or her society either positively or negatively.
A youth is one who is looked up to, to take over (sooner or later) the affair of adulthood in their home, society and Nation at large.

Every July 11, World Population is celebrated.
There are about 1.2 billion youths (of age 15 to 24 years) in the world and one billion live in developing countries (Nearly 50% of the developing world population).

This is often referred to as the ‘youth bulge’ as young people constitute a high and peaking proportion of many populations. The youth bulge represents both a challenge and an opportunity for development.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Youth development is a process that prepares a young person to meet the challenges of adolescence and adulthood and achieve his or her full potential.
Youth development is promoted through activities and experiences that help youth develop social, ethical, emotional, physical, and cognitive competences.

YOUTH AND LEADERSHIP
Youth leadership is part of youth development process and supports the young person in developing:
(a) the ability to analyze his or her own strength(s) and weaknesses, set personal and vocational goals, and have the self-esteem, confidence, motivation, and ability to carry them out (including the ability to establish or support networks in order to fully participate in community life and effect positive social change); and
(b) the ability to guide or direct others on a course of action, influence the opinions and behaviors of others, and serve as a role model, worthy of emulation.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
In order for youth to be prepared to work in partnership with adults to develop a society or nation, they need to develop and/or enhance their leadership skills.

Leadership training prepares youth to manage time, work as a team, set goals, start conversations, facilitate meetings, and make effective presentations. Promoting youth leadership development is a great way to promote positive life skills learning.

To fully participate in nation-building, youths need to be informed about the adult perspective of the problem, challenge or issue being discussed: the JARGON that adults use to describe their work; and strategies for approaching the work.

CHALLENGES OF YOUTH LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
Apparently, some organizations and adults often do not think young people are capable of demonstrating Leadership, thinking their goals and roles are not clearly defined.

Youth leadership development requires time and resources.
Youth leaders move on – sustainability and succession planning strategies are not well developed.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP AND DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA
The need for youth leaders in our environment can not be over-emphasized, it is largely important in the development or building of the country, but it saddens my heart that we have very few positive-minded youth in Nigeria and also very few youth Leadership development programs.

There is a saying often chanted and ‘hymned’ here in Nigeria: ‘Youths are the leaders of tomorrow’.
To be that leader, we have to develop and make ourself ready to truly lead tomorrow, starting from today.

To this end, I implore all Nigerian youth to participate more in activities that develop them positively and shun the ones that triggers negative effect in them because we are leaders now and definitely we are Leaders of tomorrow.

Be a Better Nigeria Youth today and always.

From the desk of B.N.Y.F Coordinator, Miss Mubor Zamiat Yetunde (@i_am_zamiat on Twitter).

World Sickle Cell Day: Let’s #StopSickleCell , Join us for awareness walk; #iWalk4SickleCell

World Sicke Cell Day is celebrated every 19th of June in order to increase the awareness about the sickle cell disease and its cure among the common public.

It was celebrated first time on 19th of June in 2009. Sickle cell disease has become a common and foremost genetic disease worldwide which is must to cure through the fast awareness campaign, curable activities, early diagnosis and management.

What is Sickle Cell Disease:

It is an inheritable, genetic and fatal disease causing red blood cells disorders which has been classified as sickle cell anemia and may lead to death.
It is the most common public health problem in the African and Asian countries of the world.

Sickle cell anemia means person suffering from anemia (less number of hemoglobin) due to the abnormal shaped red blood cells, which gets stuck in the small blood vessels. It causes blockage in the continuation of the blood flow in the blood vessels and whole body organs cannot get proper oxygen which leads to the common health problems like severe pain, organ damage or failure, severe infections, stroke, headache, liver problems, heart problems and so many.

The Objectives of celebrating World Sickle Cell Day event annually include:

This is why Better Nigeria Youth Forum would join the Sickle cell Advocacy and Management Initiative (SAMI) in Lagos for the Red Umbrella Walk.
