Report of Better Nigeria Youth Forum’s #HopeForTheChildren project.

The Hope for the Children project earlier fixed for Children’s day (May 27) was postponed till Saturday; the 30th.

B.N.Y.F members are students in tertiary institutions and were preoccupied with one School work or the other during the week but the 30th of May (Saturday) saw us visiting two orphanages in Lagos for the Hope for the Children project.

Even though some of our members couldn’t make it down, some were out of town; serving our dear nation Nigeria (on NYSC), those around met at the BRT bus-stop Iyana Ipaja, before moving together to the first Orphanage; Little Saints orphanage, located at Ekoro road, Abule Egba, Iyana Ipaja.

When we got to Little Saints at about 11:30am, the kids at the home were having a good time, celebrating one of their very own’s birthday.

Joining in the celebration, Better Nigeria Youth Forum (B.N.Y.F) had chats with the lovely children, donated gifts and our token to the children’s home. Then it was time to impact.

Usayn of B.N.Y.F took the little saints (who were girls/females) basic computer training.

Most of the kids already know what the Computer is, the training only served as a reminder to what a computer is and what a computer can do. Also, computers tricks and shortcuts were shared.

Even though electricity supply was cut off, we had to get diesel to power the generator and continue the class. It was a great class, with the girls all excited to learn a new thing.

Questions were asked, answers were given.
A little quiz was done after the training, with the girls answering correctly, getting gifts (motivational storybooks).

At about 2pm, we left Little Saints for Compassionate Orphanage.

At Compassionate Orphanage; located at Idowu Egba bus-stop, Isheri-LASU expressway, Lagos, the children were playing table tennis.

And trust the boys of Better Nigeria Youth Forum, we had it all coming. 🙂 But these kids were supercool, they did win our boys… 😀
We donated gifts and left at about 4pm.

In all, it was a great day for us.
We believe our little impact was felt.

In the words of Nelson Mandela, ‘What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived, it is what difference we have made to the life of others that will determine the significance of the life that we live’

Press Release of Better Nigeria Youth Forum’s #HopeForTheChildren project.

‘What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what differences we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we live’ ~ Tata Madiba, Nelson Mandela.

If we live in a world where complaints are more than actions, activists are more than those who are in-charge, faults are more than accolades , it is necessary that some people rise to make the change (s) needed.

In this light, a group of young, courageous and ebullient youths came together to form Better Nigerian Youth Forum.

Founded in May, 2013; Better Nigeria Youth Forum (B.N.Y.F) is a non-governmental, non-political, not-for-profit making organisation, founded by a conglomerate of purposeful youths to promote humanitarian services, volunteer works, impacting in kids positively, use of social media for nation building, education, youth development/empowerment, entrepreneurship and every other aspect of Nation building.

We inspire more role models of our generation, to lead by example and thus create a better community where people can regard themselves as leaders and the owner of their immediate environment.

At BNYF, we join other great minds involved in nation building and great humanitarian services for our nation; Nigeria.

This, we believe, is humble assignment in which we have been executing with community services and rendering help to those in need of one thing or the other around us.

We find children more vulnerable especially when they are orphans and less privileged that is why we have decided to always celebrate with them on 27th of May and days around it in a unique way to appreciate, recognize and make them feel a sense of belonging to this great community of ours (Nigeria).

The #HopeForTheChildren project is 3years old this year with the same tempo of recent years where children in orphanages receive food items, clothing, books e.t.c which kind-hearted individuals give to us so as to make the Children’s day celebration a memorable day for each of the orphans and less-privileged.

This year, our focus is on orphans at orphanage homes in Iyana Ipaja, Alimosho and Ikeja.

We seek support for this course as we’ve always been getting…

A comprehensive list of items you can donate would be posted on our blog soonest.

Words to the Youths from @i_am_zamiat (BNYF Co-ordinator)

Greetings Your Excellencies…

How have you been?
Hope you’re living life to the fullest?

Am Zamiat, the co-ordinator of Better Nigeria Youth Forum (B.N.Y.F) and I’d love to share some words with you.

Do you know Youths are the building blocks of a nation? It is a fact that the stronger the youth, the more developed the nation is. The role of the youth in nation-building occupies a central place. The countries which utilize their youth in a right direction are more developed. The energy and brightness of the minds of youth act as torch-bearer for a nation. On the contrary, the countries which fail to realize the importance of the youth lag behind in every department of life…

Dear fellow Youths of our great nation Nigeria, it is time to wake up, let’s make our country better.

Join other great minds involved in nation building…
BNYF would be glad to have you join us. 🙂

Sex Education: What Children Should Learn and When

Pregnant_mom_hugs_boy_BRAND-PHO_EN

When talking to your kids about sex, make sure the conversation is age-appropriate.

  • Explain things in a way that your child can understand, given their age.
  • Don’t think you have to cover everything at once. Younger kids are interested in pregnancy and babies, rather than the act of sex.

Every child is different, but here is a rough guide to what children should be able to understand about sex and reproduction at different ages.

Infancy: Up to two years

Toddlers should be able to name all the body parts including the genitals.

Most two-year-olds know the difference between male and female, and can usually figure out if a person is male or female.

Early childhood: Two to five years old

Children should understand the very basics of reproduction: a man and a woman make a baby together, and the baby grows in the woman’s uterus.

Children should understand their body is their own. Teach them about privacy around body issues. They should know other people can touch them in some ways but not other ways.

Middle childhood: Five to eight years old

Children should have a basic understanding that some people are heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual. They should also know what the role of sexuality is in relationships.

Children should know about the basic social conventions of privacy, nudity, and respect for others in relationships.

Children should be taught the basics about puberty towards the end of this age span, as a number of children will experience some pubertal development before age 10.

Children’s understanding of human reproduction should continue. This may include the role of sexual intercourse.

Tween years: Nine to 12 years old

In addition to reinforcing all the things above they have already learned, tweens should be taught about safer sex and contraception.

Tweens should understand what makes a positive relationship and what makes for a bad one.

Tweens should also learn to judge whether depictions of sex and sexuality in the media are true or false, realistic or not, and whether they are positive or negative.

Teenagers: 13 to 18 years old

Teens are generally very private people. However, if parents have spoken to their child early about sex increases the chance that teens will approach parents when difficult or dangerous things come up.

Impacting Children’s Lives Positively.

We all know too well that Parents are a child’s first teachers, but yes, everyone shares in the responsibility of ensuring that kids get a fair, smart start in life. A child who receives early childhood education and healthcare services before age five is more likely to succeed in grade school, high school and beyond.

Therefore, a simple request from BNYF is to help impact positively in every kid you meet.

Today, our society is so corrupt that our value systems have been eroded. Pornography now sells than other sectors put together, people now see music as the only source of inspiration… Note that we are not against music as a source of inspiration. But what nusic are our kids listening to?

Let’s inspire, equip, empower, motivate and raise leaders of excellence, at every level of the society who will be committed to the process of building our nation.

In our subsequent posts, we would be sharing how we hope to get involve in building our kids (impacting in them positively), and hence building our nation…
